6 Ways to Love the Skin You’re In

So many people become stuck in an endless cycle of envying someone else’s skin. The honest thing to acknowledge here is that while your skin might be different, it can still be flawless and perfect. You just have to practice giving it some more love and attention.

Learning to love the skin you’re in can be hard. It took me decades to get to that place myself. If you need some help, follow these six simple steps to love your skin more.

Rest and Relaxation

A good night’s sleep can work wonders for your skin. There is a reason why we call it “beauty sleep.” Not only does your body take the time to produce collagen and repair skin cells, it also allows your skin to relax.

Stress and shortage of sleep can increase the production of cortisol, the stress hormone that can trigger acne, increase the appearance of wrinkles and give rise to discoloration in the form of dark patches or even dark circles.

Drinking a lot of water

Drinking eight glasses of water every day isn’t just good for your body, it is also good for your skin. Water flushes toxins out of your body and improves your energy levels.

Moreover, your skin will appear more clear and youthful. Appearance of acne and dry skin will be greatly reduced. Make it a goal to stay hydrated, and your skin will thank you for it.

A Healthy Diet

It is true that “you are what you eat” since your diet has a direct impact on your skin. Show your skin some love by improving your diet, and you will begin to see visible results.

Reduce the amount of sugar and salt you consume on a daily basis. Think about eating one less processed food or cut out that midday fast food run. Increase your intake of leafy greens, whole fruits and healthy fats.

You’ll be amazed at how your skin reacts to a healthier diet. You’ll find you have less acne, eczema, allergies and other skin conditions.

Learn to Take Care of it

Curating a healthy skincare routine is key. It will keep your face and body clean and glowing.

Dirty skin is more prone to clogged pores, acne, blackheads, discoloration and more. With a daily skincare routine, you can look after your skin, pay attention to its wants and needs, and improve its tone and texture with ease.

Not sure where to start? Use a face wash and toner morning and night; a face serum or moisturizer once a day; exfoliate two to three times per week; and incorporate additional face treatments as needed.

Organic Not Chemical

Your skin is your body’s largest organ. That’s a lot of porous surface area for toxins to sneak in through. For this reason, when picking products to use on your skin, always choose organic instead of chemical-filled commercial products.

Take the time to read the label, and stay away from harmful chemicals that can irritate your skin or cause serious health problems in your body. You might think one “maybe, sort of” harmful ingredient here and there is okay. But if your skin is absorbing the product, those ingredients can build up in your system over time. So choose skincare made with 100% natural ingredients.

Appreciating Your Skin for All That It Does

Your skin is amazing if you stop and think about it. It’s waterproof, it helps regulate your body temperature, it’s flexible and changes shape as needed, it keeps out germs and bacteria, and it allows you to feel the world around you. 

At the end of the day, your skin is a part of you and you should love it, regardless of its *perceived* imperfections. (Those laugh lines aren’t so bad, you know.) Everyone is unique. But what stays true is that when you love your skin, it will love you back.
