Summer sun is perfect for helping your body produce natural vitamin D. However, stay in the sun too long and you’ll burn and damage your skin. This will age your skin faster and — even worse — could cause you to develop skin cancer.
When the sun comes up, most of us are concerned about slathering ourselves in goopy sunscreens. (We’ll come back to that later.) But are you also concerned about eating nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory foods that can protect you from the sun? Don’t worry — you don’t have to eat weird or hard to find foods. Many of them are what we gravitate toward in the summer anyway.
Add these foods to your grocery list or pick some up at the local farmers market so your skin can stay healthy in the sun and protect itself from damage:
Citrus fruit, strawberries, kiwis
These fruits are high in vitamin C, which can reduce the potential for sunburn when eaten frequently over time. Vitamin C also helps reverse sun damage and boost collagen production to plump the complexion. Citrus fruit, strawberries and kiwis have antioxidants that protect the skin from free radical damage caused by sunburns. Citrus fruits contain limonene, which could lower the risk of skin cancer.
Watermelon has 40% more lycopene than tomatoes. Lycopene can neutralize free radicals produced from too much sun. It can also decrease inflammatory responses to UV damage.
Carrots, Sweet Potatoes
Carrots and Sweet Potatoes are full of beta carotene, an antioxidant that protects and repairs cells that have been aged by the sun. When you get sunburned, beta carotene will fight against free radical damage, especially when it’s combined with vitamin E.
Leafy greens such as spinach and kale are good sources of lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidants that can halt cell growth from UV light.
These nuts are a wonderful source of vitamin E! Vitamin E can protect and repair the skin from sunlight. Almonds can also protect against UV damage and the breakdown of collagen (which causes wrinkles!) because they contain the flavonoid quercetin.
This superfood can help protect your outer layer of skin cells from ultraviolet B (UB) radiation damage.
Green tea is a simple, tasty drink FULL of benefits for your sun-kissed skin. It contains catechins, which are natural phenols and antioxidants that can prevent disease, protect against inflammation from sunburns, and help prevent damage from long-tern UV radiation. Green tea also contains tannic acid that can help relieve sunburn pain and a natural chemical called EGCG which has shown to stop genetic damage in skin cells caused by UV light exposure.
Flax seeds are a rich source of omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3s can protect you from sunburn, reduce inflammation from a sunburn, and fight against skin cancer.
Fish such as salmon and red snapper are also high in omega 3 fatty acids, as well as selenium. Selenium is a mineral that can reduce the risk of getting burned by the sun and help even out your skin tone.
As promised, nothing weird or hard to find. It’ll be easy to add these foods to your diet — snack on them at work, add them to a smoothie before you hit the pool, infuse your green tea with fruit at your next picnic, combine a few into a salad… Your options are endless.
One More Way to “Eat Your Skin Beautiful”
Another way to “eat your skin beautiful” and protect it from the sun, is to boost your natural ceramide level. Ceramides are a type of fat that is just below the first layer of your skin. These fat cells seem to be showing some success for treatment of certain kinds of cancer. Ceramides are one of a number of lipids that are just under the skin and serve as barrier to all the germs and other substances that would enter the blood stream. Skin can get really itchy and sore if you don’t have enough ceramides in your body. Eczema and psoriasis are often an unknown result of too low ceramide levels.
What’s amazing: ceramides, along with cholesterol and free fatty acids, are a major component of cells in the outer layer of the skin which help form the skin’s protective barrier, locking in moisture and protecting against environmental damage. As we age, our skin’s ceramide content decreases.
What to do?? Simply Beautiful Skin Supplement contains 100% natural, plant-derived ceramides which mimic the naturally occurring lipids and stops the barrier break-down, leaving wrinkles looking less pronounced and bolstering the skin’s protection.
Want even more food protection?
Chemical-laden sunscreens and sun blocks can create free radicals when exposed to sunlight. Free radicals are formed naturally in the body and play an important role in many normal cell processes. However, at high concentrations, free radicals can be hazardous and damage the major components of cells: DNA, proteins, cell membranes. This damage may play a role in the development of cancer and other health conditions.
So what can you put on your skin instead of harmful chemicals? Food, of course! More antioxidant protection against those crazy and wild free radicals!
Sun-Up™ Before Sun Protector works wonders at protecting the outer layer of your skin from sun damage. It’s packed with oils that help protect against sunburn and cancer. Unlike sunscreen, these oils — including red raspberry seed oil, unprocessed coconut oil and avocado oil — don’t completely block the UVB rays. They let in the “good rays” which are essential to our overall good health and necessary for vitamin D synthesis. The oils also protect the skin and underlying tissues from damage caused by excessive exposure.
Red raspberry seed oil is the number one ingredient in Sun-Up Before Sun Protector. It has a natural SPF of 28-50. Because it’s loaded with antioxidants, vitamins and essential fatty acids, it not only protects your skin from harmful rays, but it also nourishes and heals the skin while fighting the effects of aging. Remember the foods we listed with all the beneficial antioxidants, vitamins and essential fatty acids…? Real food on the inside AND real food on the outside will double your sun fighting power.
Sun-Up is 100% concentrated — a little goes a long way. It’s designed to stay on the skin and repel water, so it can remain for hours after application and water activity. We invite you to use this product alone or in conjunction with a sunscreen you trust. Be informed and make your decision based on the facts. Primal Life Organics cannot and does not make claims that Sun-Up is a sunscreen. (Learn more on the product page.)
Have fun in the sun this summer! But don’t forget to protect yourself, inside and out.
